MEETING

At the March 21st  meeting we will review recent photos taken at Events and any other photos taken by members that they would like to share with the group.  Five to seven is an appropriate number including Susan's "Challenge" photos.

As usual, bring your photos on a thumb drive that contains only those photos or a folder with only those photos in it to make it easy for our projectionist.

If you would like to pre-submit your photos by email, send them to:

COMING UP
Renowned nature photographer, instructor, and ornithologist Milton Heiberg will speak at our April 4 meeting.

This presentation will focus on the Florida Scrub-Jay, an imperiled species which has a special status as the "canary in the coal mine" for our state's primary source of drinking water: the Florida Aquifer. This photogenic bird - a native avian species found only in Florida - has become the poster child for efforts to create urgency concerning the dire effects of the loss of scrub habitat on our supply of drinking water.

We'll hear and see how he has put his art to work telling the story of this endangered species found right here in our part of Central Florida. More details are coming in our next newsletter. Please save the date and share the word about this exciting guest photographer!

PHOTO OPS

Your own back yard might provide subject matter for your "organic" photo, but it's fun to go to a location away from home some-times and you might come across something new that you hadn't anticipated.

Two suggestions for flowers and plants are Harry P. Leu Gardens and UCF's Arboretum.

Admission to Leu Gardens is $10 for an adult, but if you go on the first Monday of the month admission is free.  Too late for our March 21st meeting, but something to keep in mind.  Website

There is no admission charge to the UCF Arboretum.   Information and directions at their website.

CITY HALL GALLERY

The deadline approaches!  If you will be submitting a photograph, or photographs, for consideration for the five new photographs to be hung at City Hall, the deadline for submission is midnight, March 15, 2016.

The theme for the five new photographs is "Nature", and should represent nature as seen in the Oviedo area.  Any type of nature photography - birds, animals, plants, landscapes - will be considered if it was photographed in Seminole County and preferably in the Oviedo area.

To be considered, upload your photograph(s) to this Zenfolio gallery in either landscape or portrait mode in color or monochrome. While a photograph of any size or any resolution can be submitted, if your photograph is chosen you will need to provide a copy that can be cropped to a 4x3 or 3x4 ratio and enlarged to 16" x 12" or 12" x 16" for printing.

Do not watermark your image, but include your name in the copyright box.  However, the curator will not see the photographer's name.

If your photograph is chosen, there will be a charge of about $40 for framing and printing, but the framed print will be returned to you when it is rotated out.

Only submissions from Members will be considered.

PRESIDENT'S  MESSAGE

Thank you to all who came and shared their gadgets and knowledge at our last meeting. It was a lot of fun and I certainly learned something new.

We come to meetings, events and field trips to learn, make friends, have fun, eat and share our photographic successes and sometimes our photographic failures. In the process we also do a lot of volunteer work for the local community.

To paraphrase H. Jackson Brown, Jr., we don't work for recognition, but we certainly do work worthy of it. We have been recognized by the City with a gallery of our photos in City Hall since 2014. Remember the deadline for entries for the next round of nature themed photos is midnight, March 15th.

Recognition of your excellent work in that Gallery led the City Development Review Manager to ask if we could provide two photos for their area. That request quickly expanded to include three more photos for the Finance Division. As a result the five photos being replaced in City Hall will be moved to those areas and be seen by many more members of the public.

We were also recognized with a booth at the Oviedo Farmer's Market and given the prime location in front of the Lawton House. Our thanks to the Historical Society for the opportunity and thanks to all the members of other organizations who stopped by our display to say hello and thank us for all that we do.  Our members and their exhibited work are great ambassadors for the club.  My thanks to Richard K, Vallie, Margie, Jerry, Tom, Paula and Frederic who represented us so well.

My photo this month is one I displayed at the market and depicts organic shapes. An organic shape is one formed by nature, usually flowing with natural curves. The weather is beautiful, so my challenge is to go out and photograph an organic shape or two to share with us at our next meeting on March 21st.

FIELD TRIP

MARINA WALK
 LAKE MONROE RIVERWALK
SATURDAY, MARCH 26

Our next field trip will be to Sanford's RiverWalk on Lake Monroe at the Marina.

We will meet at 5 PM in front of the Riverwalk Pizzeria at the entrance to the marina on the corner of Palmetto and Seminole Blvd.  Seminole Blvd. will be blocked for the car show, and the closest parking will be at the Court House parking lot.  Expect a crowd, and a walk to the marina, so arrive early.

The photographic opportunities will range from old cars to new boats and a sunset over the lake. Sunset will be at approximately 7:40 PM.

The Celery City Cruisers will be there for their monthly car show and with a DJ providing entertainment.  At the January show there were over 200 cars on display.
Pleasure boats in the marina are always photographable, and the Rivership "Barbara-Lee" - a stern-wheel paddleboat -  may be at dock.  There are many flower beds and birds in the area.

We will meet up after the photo shoot at a local restaurant...location to be decided.

If you will be attending, email us at   oviedophotoclub@gmail.com so we'll know who to look for.  It's a good idea to include your mobile phone number in the RSVP.
